<![CDATA[God, today started out pretty rough because of Windows. As I mentioned in A Day in the Life, I use a VPN to connect to my work network and then use a remote desktop connection to access the work machine. Well, apparently there's a bug in Windows 10 with VPNs. !--more--

When I started up my desktop, none of my normal programs that connect to the internet were working, which was odd. Trying to pull up websites on my browser was hit or miss. I could get Google, but not Microsoft, for example. My e-mail client was not able to load any new e-mails. At first, I was able to connect to the VPN and remoted into the work machine. It had no issues reaching any websites. Eventually, the connection died out and couldn't do anything.

I did some research and there is a bug in windows where regardless of your connection to a VPN, some internet functions just might not work at all. I tried switching my laptop over to Windows as well, but it ended up having the same issue.

Moving back to the desktop, I uninstalled my VPN apps altogether, rebooted, and that cleared the issue. I've since been able to reinstall the apps and haven't had connection issues, but it was a massive headache trying to figure it out. Just searching "Windows 10 no internet" is too vague, and I originally ruled out my VPNs since the issue was apparent regardless of if I was connected or not, or if the service was running or not.

I'll stick with Linux for a while.

#100daystooffload #dayseventeen #work]]>

A Day in the Life

<![CDATA[Yesterday I suggested writing about what working remotely is like for me, so here we are, a day in the life. !--more--

I generally have to connect to the work VPN. With this, I can access the network storage, as well as create a remote desktop connection to my physical desktop at work. I find this extremely preferable to installing my work apps on my desktop, even though there is a noticeable loading delay.

From the remote connection, I will try to create a daily folder with all the files I will need to use during the day. Then, back on my normal desktop, I will prepare any and all reports that are part of my daily duties. Luckily, most things are done in Excel or in a webapp, which is easily accessible, regardless of the device I'm using.

I'm able to call my work phone throughout the day and can pull my voicemails so I can assist guests. I also have my e-mail configured through Thunderbird, so I have quick access to incoming messages. I could use the Outlook webapp, but it has never been preferable for me.

I started getting my team to use Microsoft Teams (we were already paying for the license with Office), so now we have communications through that. Generally it's small talk, sending GIFs, or asking questions about work that can be answered quickly. I've been able to join a few work meetings as well this way.

It's a simple setup, but I am happy and content with it.

#100daystooffload #dayfour #work]]>
